Skin Care and Makeup: What Works for This 50-Something Mom
by Charlotte Siems
When people meet me in person, their first comment is often, “Wow, you’re tall!” For me, people are usually shorter than I expected.
But someone who recently met me asked on my Facebook wall:
Are you willing to share what skin care products you use? I noticed in Houston you have BEAUTIFUL skin, and I’d love to know your secret!
Aww, shucks—thank you! I’m blessed with good genes, as my mom has good skin at her age. I’m not a makeup artist or skin care expert, for sure, but I’ve spent enough money on stuff that didn’t work to know that when I find something good, I better stick with it!
Besides drinking water and getting enough sleep, there are several other things that seem to affect my skin:
Alfalfa – Alfalfa is clinically proven to reverse aging of facial skin. I’ve been taking T-Tapp’s alfalfa for five years now and when I forget for too long, my skin looks drier and more crinkly. Alfalfa has a plumping and moisturizing effect on my skin. (Note: I can’t vouch for any other brand, because T-Tapp’s alfalfa contains only the leaves, no seeds or stems, so it won’t cause weight gain and it’s safe for those with autoimmune conditions).
Vitamin C – Plenty of Vitamin C keeps my skin clearer and brighter.
Exercise – Yep, my skin looks better when I’m consistent with exercise.
Skin brushing – I don’t brush my face, although I bought a face brush and have good intentions. But I’ve body brushed with the T-Tapp system for more than five years and it definitely affects the appearance and feel of my skin.
Now let’s move on to what I use daily on my face for cleansing, moisturizing and makeup:
Cleansing – Cetaphil liquid in a squirt bottle is used to wash my face twice a day, morning and evening. I keep one bottle in the shower, one by the sink so I don’t have to go back and forth.
Eye makeup remover – Almay moisturizing pads, the non-oily kind.
Moisturizing – T-Tapp’s Skin Saver Face under the eyes, Oil of Olay’s Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream on the face, both twice a day. With the small amounts used, the oil lasts at least six months and the cream six weeks or more.
Makeup – Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Mineral Makeup in a compact. My former liquid foundation was running low so I took a chance on a new type and I love it! Good coverage, doesn’t sink into wrinkles, lasts all day. Surprisingly, doesn’t look dry either. It has actually cleared blemishes and improved skin texture. Good thing I bought it at Ulta on a buy-one-get-one-free deal. My 20-something daughter recommended it after she switched from another brand of mineral makeup, so it’s good for all ages.
There you have it, the mix-and-match approach to skin care and makeup that works for me. Except for the new powder foundation, I’ve been using most of these products for years. It’s always fun to see what works for others because we might find something new to try.
