I will turn 52 years old soon (the day doesn’t matter, because the birthday isn’t the point).  Birthdays are usually a time of reflection and evaluation for me.  Come to think of it, I’m not real sure how I got to be in my 50’s.  I feel more like thirty-something.

At any rate, since it’s almost my birthday, here are the Top Ten Things I Don’t Regret Doing in My Life So Far, in no particular order:

1.     Getting married young.

3.     Homeschooling.
4.     Spending tons of time with my children.

5.     Marrying my husband.

6.     Making a homey home.

7.     Celebrating holidays, even small ones.
8.     T-Tapping my way to 100-pound weight loss and becoming a T-Tapp Trainer to help and encourage others.

9.     Breastfeeding and natural childbirth.

10.   Being a Christian.

I realize that others make different choices for themselves and their families.  These are just some things that stand out in my memory as being choices that now bring me a great deal of satisfaction.

Do I have some regrets?  Of course.  I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not perfect.  I could make a long list of things I wish I hadn’t done, and things I wish I’d known, especially as a wife and mother.

While it’s important to honestly evaluate ourselves and ask forgiveness where needed (without rationalizing or being a martyr), constantly focusing on regrets and what-ifs is a recipe for depression.

Okay, so here’s a short list of Three Things I Wish I’d Known:

1.    I can choose my thoughts.
2.    Kids will be adults most of their lives.
3.    Most of my struggles stem from self-focus and lack of faith.

I finally realized that thinking I didn’t do anything well was a sort of false humility and self-focus.  I thought I was being humble, and it turns out I was being prideful.  Don’t get me started on that sermon.

Our grown children are coming in this weekend for an early birthday party for me.  It warms my mother’s heart and I can’t wait to see them all.  At one time in my life, presents would have been important but now I just want to see everyone together and hear their laughter.

Thanks for letting me share some birthday perspective with you.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment below.

This is awesome ! I will be 61 years old in July and i was told at age 22 that due to a heart condition i have i could not have children . Before i found this out i married a man who had 2 children a boy and a girl that were ages 13 and 15 ! Those kids grew up and between them had 6 grandchildren then they grew up and had 12 great grandkids and we have been married 41 years in May and both us got saved 40 years in June so my life time goal i try to focus on is being a better christian everyday ; being the best step mother to those kids; step grandma and step great grandma to them all. I REALLY DON’T LIKE THAT WORD STEP AND NEITHER DOES ANYONE INVOLVED BUT I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED THEIR MOM TO BE LOVED AND RESPECTED FIRST ! Then my next thing was when i was 22 they told us a OSU hospital i could die anytime all my artery’s are  the size of a 5 year old child but when i walked out of that hospital i determined in my heart to live my life as full as possible enjoying and encouraging others to do the same . I spend alot of time doing things like i got 2 parrots and 2 house dogs i take care of ;sew and draw cartoon characters read ect because i can’t do much that requires me to be active . I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS GOD HAS BEEN GOOD TO ME ! I love to play the piano and guitar and sing . LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT I COULD HAVE CHOSE TO STAY IN BED MOST OF MY LIFE AND SAY POOR ME ! SO YES EVEN THO OUR STORIES ARE VERY DIFFERENT BOTH I BELIEVE GOD IS PLEASED WITH ! THANK YOU FOR SHARING ! UPDATE ON MY HEALTH NOW THEY KNOW ALL MY ARTERY’S ARE  OVER 80% BLOCKED AND THEY SAY WELL YOU HAVE LIVED THIS LONG YOU MIGHT LIVE TO GET OLD ! DUH ! LOL !  I TELL MY HUSBAND WHEN THEY PRONOUNCE ME DEAD I WILL PROBABLY KICK ONE MORE TIME ! I LOVE LIFE BECAUSE GOD HELP ME MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES FOR ME IN LIFE ! THANK YOU AGAIN !

As a Mom with little ones, I forget that they will be adults all too soon.  Though, I often feel sad when I see how fast they’ve grown!!  I appreciate your top ten and your top three list.  Good things to think on.  And Happy Birthday!

As a homeschooling mom of many myself, I would love to hear your two talks that you’re doing at the winter summit.  Will a CD of them be available?

  • Brigonia

Excellent list!  I have done and don’t regret almost all of the same things.  I only have 8 children though.

Thanks for sharing, Charlotte! I thought that was such a beautiful list. It got me kind of choked up. I was just thinking about my own choices today (and I’m only 23) and wondering just how I’ll feel down the road when I look back and realize that I spent years at home as a homemaker without children. Will I regret it? I don’t think so. I’m glad I got married young also to the man that I did, that I’m a Christian, that I get to make a “homey home” and many other things. Thank you for your faith and inspiration. I just love you!

    Happy Birthday!  I know what you mean about having all the children together.  :)  I used to not understand why my mom made such a big deal over my often absences at family gatherings… but now I understand.  {hugs}

God bless you and your family, Charlotte!  I have one child and I now homeschool him because of you wonderful ladies on the T-Tapp forums.  My son is so much happier.  I also love being a Christian and a wife.  Thanks so much for the form tips.  T-Tapp and Teresa are truly gifts.
